Arkansas and Missouri State Students Meet with Esri and USGS to Learn about LiDAR and The National Map Corps

Post submitted by Misty Carr, Missouri State University ASPRS member

On April 17th, our local chapter of ASPRS attended a workshop and presentation session hosted by USGS-Rolla.

A representative from ESRI, Gregory Brunner, presented several informative overviews of ESRI’s 3-D visualization tools. The workshop included several hands-on tutorials that allowed us to use the ArcMap LAS tools to manipulate and analyze several LIDAR datasets.

We also participated in a web-conferenced presentation by Elizabeth McCartney of USGS on The National Map Corps program and the benefit of responsible crowd-sourced data (VGI: Volunteered Geographic Information) for the future of mapping sciences.

I think I can speak for the ASPRS members who attended from both Missouri State University and University of Arkansas when I say that the event was both fun and enriching. I would recommend that other university students and instructors participate in workshops like this in the future. The representatives of ESRI, ASPRS, and USGS made this a remarkably enjoyable experience.
